This month at our Cor meeting, we discussed the Six Announcements of the Maronite Church and watched a portion of a television program hosted by Fr. Mitch Pacwa, SJ.
The Maronite Church, a sui iuris particular Church in full communion with the Catholic Church, has a different interpretation of Advent then the Latin Church. The preparation for Christmas in the Maronite Church consists of six weeks of announcements. The announcements are:
- Announcement to Zechariah – Luke 1:5-25
- Announcement to Mary – Luke 1:26-38
- Visitation of Mary – Luke 1:39-45
- Birth of John the Baptist – Luke 1:57-66
- Revelation to Joseph – s
- Genealogy of Jesus – Luke 2:1-20
In our Cor meeting we watched Fr. Pacwa’s presentation on numbers five and six.
You can watch the entire Scripture and Tradition Maronite Christmas program here.
What is the Maronite Church? The Maronite Church is a sui iuris particular Church in full communion with the Catholic Church and the Pope. The current head of the Maronite Church (under Pope Francis) is Patriarch Bechara Boutros al-Rahi in Bkerke, Lebanon. They derive their origin from the fourth century Syriac hermit St. Maron. Primarily, Maronites live in Lebanon but some live elsewhere such as Syria, Cyprus, Israel, Jordan, and the United States.
